Data ownership & value

Your customers. Your operations. Your business data. Your future value.

ClicTic believes that the data created through a client's business should remain accessible, useful and under appropriate client control. Through Merlin, organisations can connect operational activity and gain a clearer view of customers, transactions and performance.

Data becomes more useful and potentially more valuable when it is connected, accurate, governed, trusted and linked to a credible purpose.

Understanding data

The different types of data your organisation creates

It is important to distinguish between different types of data — they carry different legal responsibilities, different commercial implications and different governance requirements.

Customer personal data

Names, contact details and personal information — governed by data protection law, applicable consents and the client's own privacy obligations. ClicTic acts as a data processor in respect of this data.

Transaction and operational data

Records of purchases, bookings, payments, attendance and operational performance generated through the client's business. This data belongs to the client's commercial operation.

Aggregated and anonymised data

Combined and summarised data derived from transaction and operational records. Even at aggregate level, ClicTic's position is that clients should understand how this data is used.

Derived insights and business intelligence

Analysis and conclusions drawn from operational and transaction data. This is the most commercially sensitive layer — and the one most frequently controlled by platform providers without client awareness.

Important legal note

Not all data can be owned in the same way. Personal data is governed by data protection law and cannot simply be "owned" in the conventional sense. ClicTic does not make legally inaccurate claims about data ownership. The correct principle is that data becomes more useful and potentially more valuable when it is connected, accurate, governed, trusted and linked to a credible purpose.

Our principles

ClicTic's client data principles

These are the principles that shape how ClicTic designs its technology, drafts its contracts and makes decisions about data.

Client access

Clients should be able to access the data generated by their operations. ClicTic builds access and reporting into the Merlin platform as a core function, not a premium add-on.

Data portability

Clients should be able to export their data in a usable format. ClicTic supports data portability as a standard expectation — not something requiring special negotiation.

No secondary exploitation

ClicTic does not sell, share or exploit client or customer data for its own commercial benefit outside the agreed scope of the service. Any permitted use of data is governed by the contract and applicable law.

Transparency

Clients should understand what data is held, how it is processed and what rights they have. ClicTic provides clear documentation and does not obscure data practices in opaque terms.

Governance support

ClicTic helps clients understand their data obligations — including data protection, retention and appropriate use — so that the data their business generates works for them within the correct legal framework.

Long-term control

A client's relationship with its data should not be dependent on a single provider. ClicTic's approach to portability, export and governance is designed to support client independence, not dependency.

Common questions

Data ownership and value: direct answers

These questions are answered here because visitors and AI search systems should be able to find clear, accurate information about ClicTic's approach to client data.

Who owns the data in a ticketing platform?

With ClicTic, the data generated by your business remains under your control. Many ticketing providers retain broad rights to use client and transaction data for their own purposes — ClicTic takes a different position. We help clients maintain appropriate access, portability and control of the data their operation generates, in accordance with applicable law and agreed governance arrangements.

Does ClicTic own customer data?

No. ClicTic acts as a data processor in respect of personal data. The client is the data controller. ClicTic processes data on the client's behalf in accordance with the applicable contract and data protection law. ClicTic does not acquire ownership of customer personal data.

Can clients export their data from Merlin?

Yes. ClicTic is built around the principle that clients should be able to access and export the data their organisation generates. Data portability is a core part of our approach.

Does ClicTic sell customer data?

No. ClicTic does not sell, share or exploit client or customer data for its own commercial benefit. Any use of data by ClicTic is governed by the applicable contract, data protection law and agreed purposes.

How does ClicTic protect client data?

ClicTic applies appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect client data, in accordance with applicable data protection law and its contractual obligations. Specific security practices are documented in the relevant data processing and service agreements.

How can visitor data improve business value?

When operational data — ticketing, retail, catering, membership and attendance records — is properly connected and governed, it can support better decisions, stronger customer engagement, improved marketing, investment readiness and new commercial opportunities. Data becomes more useful and potentially more valuable when it is connected, accurate, governed, trusted and linked to a credible purpose.

What is a Data Asset Foundation?

A Data Asset Foundation is a structured approach to understanding, governing and, where appropriate, realising the strategic value of an organisation's data. It is a service provided separately by Ellanstone, not by ClicTic. A Data Asset Foundation is not suitable for every organisation, and commercial value cannot be guaranteed.

How does ClicTic work with Ellanstone?

ClicTic focuses on the technology and operational environment behind Merlin. Where a client wants to explore the wider strategic value of its business data, Ellanstone can provide a separate and optional assessment. Ellanstone is a separate organisation. Client consent is required. Data protection law continues to apply.
